Why Bathroom Paint Peels and How to Stop It

Many DIYers give their bathroom a quick refresh coat in spring. At first, everything looks spotless, up-to-date and as if a professional has done it. The trap only snaps much later: when moisture, the wrong products and poor preparation combine, the paint starts to peel, the plaster begins to crack and frustration quickly follows.

When a perfect bathroom paint job slowly crumbles

At first it all looks glossy - supposedly

It is a familiar scenario: a trip to the DIY store, a promotion, a tub of wall paint boldly labelled “interior paint”, plus a new roller. One Saturday later, the old, yellowed bathroom wallpaper turns into a bright, welcoming spa-like space. For the first few weeks, the finish looks flawless.

That is exactly where the issue begins. Standard interior wall paint is designed for dry rooms: living rooms, bedrooms and hallways. Bathrooms operate under very different conditions. Showers, baths and hot water regularly push humidity levels up fast. You can feel it on your skin - and the paint film on the wall feels it even more.

If you focus only on price and appearance and skip a dedicated moisture-room or bathroom paint, you are effectively setting up a problem that will only become visible after a delay.

After 6 to 18 months, the nasty surprise arrives

The turning point is often somewhere between six months and a year and a half. Small bubbles appear seemingly out of nowhere - usually first above the shower and along the ceiling, then on wall areas that are directly exposed to steam. The surface looks swollen, bumps form and, over time, those blisters split open.

These areas, in particular, take the most punishment:

  • The ceiling directly above the bath or shower
  • Wall sections where steam hits head-on
  • Corners where damp air collects
  • Areas above radiators and heated towel rails

In these zones, humidity repeatedly rises well above 80 per cent. Basic interior paint can hardly cope with figures like that. It absorbs moisture, loses adhesion and eventually flakes off in strips.

Why paint really peels in the bathroom

Water vapour works like a silent sledgehammer

The damage does not happen overnight; it builds through countless small attacks. With every hot shower, dense steam forms and works its way beneath the paint layer. The wall gradually takes up moisture, the paint film expands, then contracts again, and little by little it loses its grip on the substrate.

Moisture can be especially destructive on plasterboard, filled areas or older plaster, acting almost like a solvent that weakens the bond between wall and coating. The blisters are the visible signal that the system has failed. Once you reach that stage, patch repairs will not solve it - the only reliable fix is to rebuild the surface properly.

What the NF EN 13300 standard has to do with your bathroom

If you are painting a bathroom, it is better to ignore marketing names and look at technical specifications. One key indicator is classification to the NF EN 13300 standard. Among other things, it categorises paints by wet scrub resistance. In heavily used, humid rooms, you need a high resistance class and products that are explicitly stated as suitable for moisture-prone spaces or bathrooms.

In shops, you will commonly see descriptions such as:

  • “Bathroom and kitchen paint”
  • “Moisture-room paint”
  • “Mould-inhibiting emulsion paint for wet rooms”
  • “Glycol or synthetic resin paint for moisture-prone rooms”

What matters is that the paint resists water uptake and forms a tough, durable surface. Many manufacturers state on the tub whether the product is suitable for bathrooms and kitchens. Cut corners here - or fail to read the label carefully - and you will pay twice later.

How to rescue a damaged bathroom - and prevent fresh problems

Preparation: remove loose paint and stabilise the substrate

If the damage is already present, painting over it will not work. Any loose, hollow-sounding areas must be removed completely. In practice that means scraping back, sanding and clearing away dust. It often reveals larger voids that need to be refilled. Only once the base is clean, dry and sound is it worth moving on.

Next comes a moisture-protection primer - a primer that seals the surface and evens out suction. That helps limit how much water can soak into plaster or plasterboard, and it allows the topcoat to adhere far more reliably.

Proper ventilation: without it, even the best paint won’t help much

Even a high-quality moisture-room paint cannot perform miracles if the bathroom air stays damp for long periods. If you have no window - or you rarely ventilate - you are not only encouraging blistering, but also mould.

Ideally, use controlled extraction, such as a fan that continues running after the light is switched off. The aim is to keep day-to-day humidity under 65 per cent wherever possible. A simple hygrometer costs very little and shows how “wet” the air really is.

Practical everyday measures:

  • After showering, leave the door open and create cross-ventilation in other rooms
  • If you have a window, open it wide for at least ten minutes rather than leaving it on the latch
  • Fit an extractor fan with a run-on timer, or check whether the existing fan is powerful enough
  • Avoid drying wet towels permanently in a closed bathroom

Two coats, applied correctly - don’t rush the drying

For a finish that lasts in a bathroom, two full coats are essential. It also helps to roll each coat in different directions so you build an even film. Between coats, the paint must dry completely. Leaving at least 24 hours is sensible; in cool, humid air, it is better to wait longer.

If you apply the second coat too soon, you trap moisture in the lower layer. That raises the risk of bubbling and early failure again - exactly what you are trying to avoid.

How to plan your next bathroom painting project correctly from the start

Keep materials, indoor climate and routine in mind

A bathroom that keeps looking good for years needs more than just a fresh tub of paint. The result depends on getting three things right:

  • Suitable products for moisture-prone rooms and wet zones
  • Thorough preparation, including primer and a sound substrate
  • Ventilation and heating habits that remove moisture quickly

If you plan around these points from the outset, you not only avoid blisters and flaking, but you also protect grout lines, silicone seals and bathroom furniture.

Further tips: reduce mould risk, increase comfort

Where moisture regularly lingers on walls, mould is never far behind. Some specialist bathroom paints include fungicidal additives that slow fungal growth. They are not a replacement for good ventilation, but they can add a useful buffer - especially in small internal bathrooms without a window.

One practical example: if you avoid plastered surfaces within the shower area and use tiles or a continuous shower wall instead, you drastically reduce the surface exposed to steam. The rest of the room can then be finished with moisture-room paint, which looks modern and remains technically straightforward.

If you are planning to refresh your bathroom soon, do not just choose the nicest shade. Check carefully which products are designed for this high-demand space - and whether your ventilation can keep up. A few extra hours of planning can prevent years of annoyance with peeling paint.
