Restore Shower Pressure by Cleaning Blocked Shower Head Holes

A drop in shower pressure does not always mean the unit has failed. In many cases, the issue is simply that the tiny holes in the shower head’s spray plate are clogged with limescale, sand and sediment, which restricts the water flow rate.

Why does a shower lose pressure over time?

With day-to-day use, minerals carried in the water gradually build up in the small openings where the spray comes out. As those points become blocked, the flow turns uneven, the shower feels weaker, and the pressure seems lower.

Before you replace the shower head, it is worth cleaning the spray plate properly, because the blockage is often right at the outlet. The job is straightforward, but it does require switching off the circuit breaker first, reducing the chance of electric shock and other risks while you handle the parts.

The most common signs usually look like this:

  • Jets: some streams come out at an angle, weak, or stop altogether in certain holes.
  • Limescale: pale, crusty deposits form around the water outlets.
  • Brush: soft bristles lift grime without widening the holes.
  • Circuit breaker: should be turned off before any cleaning.
  • Technician: needed when the fault is coming from the pipework.

What do the shower head holes have to do with flow rate?

The shower head is the end point of the water supply, designed with many tiny holes to spread the flow so it covers a wider area evenly. When some of those channels close up, the water loses proper distribution.

That is why “low pressure” can simply be water trying to squeeze through fewer outlets. Rather than forcing debris further in with sharp objects, the better approach is to dissolve the residue and protect the holes in the spray plate.

How to clean the shower spray plate safely

Start by switching off the bathroom circuit breaker and making sure the shower is cold before touching anything. If your model allows it, remove the spray plate and mix white vinegar with warm water.

Soak before brushing

The deposits need to soften first. Vinegar helps loosen mineral build-up stuck around the spray nozzles. Once soaked, a soft brush can remove what is left without misshaping the openings.

Leave the spray plate submerged for a few hours, then brush the nozzles gently. Rinse thoroughly, refit the part, only restore power at the very end, and test the spray carefully.

Clean in this order:

  • switch off the circuit breaker before taking anything apart;
  • remove the spray plate only if the model is designed for it;
  • soak it in white vinegar and warm water for a few hours;
  • brush with soft bristles, without using needles;
  • rinse, refit, and test the flow rate.

Why you should not poke the holes with a needle

Prodding the holes with a needle may feel like the quickest fix, but it can widen the outlets, distort the spray pattern, and push dirt deeper into the part. That can worsen distribution and shorten the shower head’s lifespan.

It is also best to avoid knives, wire, hard picks and corrosive products, as they can damage plastic, rubber or metal components. Effective cleaning relies on soaking time, a soft brush and patience, not force.

Avoid these mistakes during maintenance:

  • piercing the nozzles with a needle or wire;
  • using harsh chemicals without the manufacturer’s guidance;
  • cleaning the shower while it is still powered;
  • forcing older or dried-out parts during disassembly;
  • turning the circuit breaker back on before everything is properly seated.

When low pressure points to a bigger problem

If you have tried cleaning the shower head holes to improve pressure, pay attention to whether the issue remains afterwards. When every tap and shower in the home has low flow rate, the cause may be in the pipework.

A low water tank level, a partially closed stopcock, ageing pipes or internal blockages may need a technical assessment, particularly if the drop is sudden. In those situations, replacing the shower head may not help, and the best option is to call a professional for a proper diagnosis.
