Many drivers are now turning to a simple trick.

Across forums, Facebook groups and even police reports, the same tip keeps cropping up more and more often: wrap your car key in aluminium foil. It may sound like something from a kitchen craft session, but the reason is thoroughly modern. Car thieves have largely moved on from crowbars and forced entry; they now rely on radio technology - and a few layers of aluminium foil can slow that down.

How radio key fobs make life easier for car thieves

The convenient “Keyless” system has changed day-to-day life for many motorists. The key stays in your pocket, and the car unlocks and starts automatically as soon as you are close enough. Behind the scenes, the key communicates continuously with the vehicle at around 315 or 433 MHz.

That very convenience creates an ideal opening for criminals. Radio signals do what radio signals do: they travel. With the right kit, that signal can be extended significantly - without the owner noticing anything at all.

Relay attack: when the key is in the hallway and the car disappears from outside

The best-known method is the “relay attack”. Two offenders typically work together:

  • One stands with a signal amplifier near the front door or flat door.
  • The other stands by the car with a second device.
  • The signal from the key inside the home is boosted and “relayed” to the car.
  • The vehicle “believes” the key is right next to it - and unlocks and starts.

The owner is asleep, the key is sitting in the hallway, and yet the car can be gone from the drive seconds later. No smashed glass, no noise, no witnesses.

Alongside this, so‑called signal or code grabbers exist. They intercept the key’s radio codes, store them and can imitate them later. With cheap electronics readily available online, these devices are no longer limited to professional organised gangs.

Why aluminium foil stops the high-tech trick

Aluminium foil sounds like a kitchen staple, not a security tool. From a physics point of view, though, it behaves like a basic, DIY high-security enclosure.

A Faraday cage for the key in your pocket

As soon as you wrap your radio key in aluminium foil, you create a kind of “Faraday cage”. The idea dates back to the 19th century: a conductive metal shell shields what is inside from electromagnetic fields.

When the radio signal hits the aluminium foil, the electrical current runs along the outside surface. Inside, virtually nothing gets through. The key can neither transmit nor receive.

How to wrap the key properly

Many people make the mistake of wrapping the key only half-heartedly. That can still leave it reachable. If you want to use this trick, a few points matter:

  • Cover the entire key - no gaps and no open corners.
  • Use two to three layers of aluminium foil, not just one.
  • Press the edges down firmly so no cracks form.
  • Do a test: stand right by the car and check whether the doors still unlock.
  • Replace the foil regularly if it becomes crumpled or torn.

This works regardless of make or model. Whether it’s a small hatchback or a premium SUV, the underlying radio technology follows the same physical rules.

If you want proper protection for your car, it is best to think in layers. Aluminium foil blocks the key’s radio signal, but it does not solve every security weakness.

Traditional anti-theft devices that still work

Even if they look old-fashioned, mechanical locks can put thieves off. A bulky steering wheel clamp signals one thing: this car will take time.

  • Fit a steering wheel lock or wheel clamp in a clearly visible way
  • Use a clearly noticeable alarm system with an LED indicator
  • Park in well-lit areas
  • If possible, park where people pass by more frequently

Most thieves look for quick, low-profile opportunities. Every extra obstacle increases their risk - and makes other vehicles more appealing.

Use the electronics properly - not just have them fitted

Many cars come with built-in features that hardly anyone actively checks:

Where your keys should really be at night

Aluminium foil or an RFID-blocking pouch does little if your keys are hanging right by the front door and the shielding is imperfect.

Better results come from consistent habits. Especially in homes with more than one vehicle, a clear rule helps: keep all keys in the same secure spot, ideally in a central location inside the home.

A metal box or tin is ideal, as it further absorbs the signal. The farther the keys are from external walls, windows or the front door, the harder it is for signal boosters outside to do their job.

Turn off the Keyless function - if you can

Many modern vehicles allow you to disable passive Keyless access in the settings. That means the driver has to press the button on the remote again, rather than simply approaching the car.

You lose some convenience, but it almost entirely removes the basis for relay attacks. If you leave your car parked for longer periods or drive infrequently, this trade-off often feels minor compared with the security benefit.

What terms like Faraday cage and RFID actually mean

Discussions about this topic often throw around technical buzzwords that can be confusing. Two come up particularly often for drivers.

A Faraday cage refers to any conductive enclosure that screens electric fields - from the metal body of an aircraft to aluminium foil around your key. The crucial point is that the metal forms a closed shell that radio waves can barely penetrate.

RFID stands for “Radio-Frequency Identification”. Modern car keys also use radio technologies in this broader sense, similar to contactless bank cards. That is why manufacturers sell RFID-blocking cases, which work internally like a sturdier, more elegant version of aluminium foil.

What a realistic day-to-day scenario can look like

Imagine it is a normal weekday. You get home, drop the key as usual on the sideboard next to the front door, and go to bed. During the night, a delivery van drives slowly along the street. Two people get out; one stays by the car, while the other walks past the house as if by chance.

What you do not see: in the man’s jacket pocket is a small box with an aerial. He pauses briefly near your door, and the device picks up the signal from your key. It is amplified and sent to the accomplice by the car. Your vehicle unlocks, starts and rolls away quietly. In the morning, there is only an empty space left.

Now the same scene, but with aluminium foil and a dedicated key box: the device by the front door receives - nothing. No usable signal, no start, no getaway. The thieves have to look elsewhere.

What the trick can do - and what it can’t

Aluminium foil provides targeted protection against radio-based attacks on Keyless systems. It does not replace fully comprehensive insurance, an alarm system or plain common sense. Leaving windows open or keeping vehicle documents in the glovebox is still risky.

Using the foil trick mainly buys you time and control. Opportunist thieves will find it much harder to access the car. Professional gangs have to put in more effort and will often choose easier targets instead. Combined with mechanical security, good lighting and properly used vehicle electronics, it creates a protection package that makes a noticeable difference in everyday life.
