Anti-fog trick for windows: washing-up liquid or glycerin against misted panes

Wake up in the morning, raise the blinds - and instead of a clear view you’re met with wet, milky window panes.

A simple household trick puts an end to it.

Plenty of people know the scene: freezing temperatures outside, warm central heating inside - and the glass is completely misted over. Instead of daylight, a grey haze fills the room, and water gathers on the window sills. What looks like a harmless winter nuisance can, over time, damage frames and seals and even affect your health. One easy method using an everyday cupboard staple helps keep panes clear in the morning - without pricey gadgets.

Why windows keep steaming up in winter

Misted-up windows aren’t a “just one of those things” problem; it’s straightforward physics. Warm indoor air can hold a lot of moisture - from breathing, cooking, showering, and drying clothes. When that damp air meets a cold pane of glass, it cools down and can no longer retain all the water it’s carrying. The excess moisture then settles on the glass as tiny droplets.

That’s exactly where the familiar morning “fog” comes from. The bigger the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures, the heavier the condensation. These areas tend to be hit hardest:

  • Bedrooms (exhaled moisture + windows kept shut overnight)
  • Kitchens (cooking, kettle use, dishwasher steam)
  • Bathrooms (shower, bath)
  • Rooms with lots of houseplants or clothes airers

It’s not just an eyesore. If water repeatedly runs down the panes and frames, it can seep into timber, silicone seals, or even the surrounding masonry. Over time, this encourages damp patches and mould.

Many people respond on autopilot: wiping the glass with a cloth every morning or turning the heating up even higher. Neither tackles the underlying cause. A cloth simply spreads the moisture around, and extra heat can actually make the situation worse if you’re not ventilating properly.

The surprisingly simple fix from the kitchen cupboard

Rather than constantly cleaning up after the fact, you can address the issue directly on the surface. The idea is to alter the glass so droplets don’t gather into that milky film in the first place.

You don’t need a specialist product. Two everyday options are enough:

  • standard washing-up liquid, or
  • a vegetable glycerin solution from a chemist or pharmacy

Both belong to the group known as surfactants - surface-active substances. They won’t damage glass, but they do change how water behaves on it.

Normally, moisture forms lots of tiny beads that scatter light, making the pane look cloudy. With a surfactant layer, the moisture spreads more as a very thin film, which still lets light pass through. The window stays transparent even though, on a molecular level, there’s still some moisture on the surface.

It’s the same principle used by divers for masks and motorcyclists for visors. The identical effect works on ordinary household windows - for next to nothing.

How to apply the trick properly

What matters isn’t the product itself so much as how little you use. Too much washing-up liquid or glycerin will leave the glass smeary. Get the amount right and you’ll notice nothing - except a clear view.

Step 1: Clean the window thoroughly

Before applying the anti-fog layer, the panes need to be clean and fully dry. Otherwise dust, grease and fingerprints can effectively get sealed under the layer and later show up as streaks.

  • Clean the glass with a normal glass cleaner or warm water with a small amount of washing-up liquid.
  • Dry with a squeegee or a lint-free cloth.
  • Quickly wipe frames and seals so no water is left standing.

Step 2: Apply the anti-fog layer

Now for the actual trick - and it’s done faster than a pot of coffee takes to brew:

  • Put a single small drop of washing-up liquid or glycerin onto a slightly damp microfibre cloth.
  • Rub it over the inside of the pane using circular motions, covering the whole surface.
  • Without rinsing, buff with a second, dry cloth until no marks are visible.

Afterwards, the glass looks completely normal - clear, no streaks, no greasy sheen. The effective part is the invisible residue left behind as a microscopic film. Important: don’t wipe over with water afterwards, or you’ll remove the very layer you’ve just created.

What actually changes the next morning

Apply the method in the evening and you’ll usually notice the difference the very next day. It can be frosty outdoors, the heating can be on indoors - and the treated pane still stays surprisingly clear.

Of course, this doesn’t remove moisture from the room. It simply stops it settling as a dense layer of droplets on the glass. That brings several benefits at once:

  • No more daily wiping of the panes
  • Less water running down into seals and frames
  • Lower mould risk around the window area
  • More daylight and a better mood in the morning

Many people say the room feels overall “drier” and more comfortable because the usual damp corners by the window disappear. Depending on humidity levels and how you ventilate, the effect can last several days up to around a week. After that, a quick reapplication with a minimal amount of washing-up liquid or glycerin is enough.

How to reduce condensation even further long term

The anti-fog method works directly on the glass. If you also get the indoor climate under control, you’ll boost the effect considerably. Helpful habits include:

  • Shock-ventilating: open windows wide for 5–10 minutes several times a day instead of leaving them on the latch.
  • Keep the door shut when cooking and showering, then air the room properly afterwards.
  • Avoid drying laundry in small, poorly ventilated rooms.
  • Don’t pack every corner with houseplants; limit varieties that give off lots of moisture.
  • Keep heating moderate but steady, rather than frequent temperature swings.

If you’re unsure how damp the air really is, a simple hygrometer can help. In living spaces, 40–60% relative humidity is generally considered comfortable. If readings sit well above that for long periods, not only does the risk of mould on walls rise, but dust mites and other allergy triggers also thrive.

Why glycerin and washing-up liquid work so well

Glycerin holds on to moisture without evaporating itself. It’s used in cosmetics, foods and pharmaceutical products, and it’s sold in small bottles in chemists. On glass it creates a fairly durable film that tends to last longer.

Washing-up liquid offers similar advantages, is already in most homes, and is immediately to hand. Its surfactants normally break down grease in the sink; here, they mainly change the surface tension on the pane. If you want a quick fix, washing-up liquid is the practical choice.

If you have very delicate frame finishes or allergies, try the method on a small area first. In most cases the quantities are so tiny that irritation is unlikely. For children’s rooms, glycerin may be preferable because it’s typically formulated to be gentler.

In day-to-day life, the same approach can be used on other glass surfaces too: shower screens, bathroom mirrors, or glass covers in hallways can all benefit. Bathroom mirrors that normally fog up immediately after a shower stay clear for much longer - a few seconds’ work that can save time every morning.
