EU plans ban on PFAS ‘forever chemicals’ in everyday products

The EU is preparing to prohibit an entire class of substances that turn up in saucepans, jackets, make-up and even pizza boxes. Scientists have been warning for years about so-called “forever chemicals”. Europe is now close to taking action - with consequences for our homes, our wardrobes and the way we think about convenience.

What’s behind the “forever chemicals”

The substances in question are known as PFAS - per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. This umbrella term covers more than 9,000 different chemicals that have been used since the 1940s. They repel water, resist grease, tolerate high heat and are remarkably tough against other chemicals. Those qualities are exactly why industry embraced them.

Without really noticing, we come across PFAS in day-to-day life in many places. Common examples include:

  • Non-stick coated frying pans and saucepans
  • Outdoor and rain jackets with water-repellent treatments
  • Grease-resistant fast-food wrappers and cardboard trays
  • Stain-protection sprays for sofas and carpets
  • Certain cosmetics such as long-wear make-up or lipstick formulations
  • Some paints, varnishes and protective coatings used on furniture and appliances

What used to be marketed as durability is now seen by researchers as the central issue. PFAS barely break down at all. They can remain in soil and water for centuries and build up in plants, animals and ultimately in people.

Why PFAS are risky for people and the environment

Their resilience comes with a downside: PFAS spread worldwide. Monitoring has detected them in rivers, lakes and seawater - even in Arctic ice, far from any factory. They enter the food chain through air, water and food.

Some PFAS also end up in drinking water. In parts of Europe, restrictions for tap water are already in place because limit values have been exceeded. People living in affected areas are advised to filter water or switch to bottled water.

From a health perspective, PFAS are suspected of affecting several processes in the body. Studies and assessments from different countries point, among other things, to:

  • Effects on the immune system, such as a weaker vaccine response
  • A higher risk of certain cancers, such as kidney cancer
  • Changes in cholesterol levels and liver function
  • Possible impacts on fertility and children’s development

How strong the link is depends on the specific compound, the dose and the duration of exposure. Even so, political pressure is increasing to reduce exposure as much as possible. Several EU countries - including Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden - have been pushing for a far-reaching ban for some time.

What the EU is specifically aiming to ban

The European Commission is currently working on wide-ranging regulation. The goal is to remove PFAS from most everyday products. This is not intended as an overnight U-turn, but as a phased withdrawal. The first restrictions could apply as early as 2026.

The logic is to give companies time to adapt products, test new formulations and identify alternative materials. However, the era of free rein is ending - anyone using PFAS should expect much tighter rules.

Some areas - such as certain high-tech uses in medical technology or specialised electronics - may receive time-limited exemptions where no safe alternative is available yet. For everyday items, though, the direction is clear: away from PFAS and towards solutions that are less persistent.

Which accessories will change - and which might disappear

For consumers, the immediate question is whether favourite items will have to go. Strictly speaking, it is not the accessories that vanish, but the chemistry behind them. Many products will remain on sale, though their performance may shift.

In the kitchen: pans, baking tins, takeaway packaging

The biggest adjustment is likely to be in the kitchen. Non-stick pans with classic fluoropolymer coatings are under particular scrutiny. Manufacturers are already developing alternatives such as ceramic or sol-gel surfaces. These can be a little more delicate, which changes how you use them: less metal utensils, more careful cleaning and lower heat settings.

Single-use fast-food packaging is also set to change. Grease-resistant cartons will need new barriers that do not rely on PFAS. Some chains are already trialling options based on starch, cellulose or waxes.

In the wardrobe: rain jackets, technical clothing, trainers

Outdoor clothing has relied on PFAS for years to make jackets durably water- and dirt-repellent. Going forward, many brands will use different treatments. Rain jackets will still be waterproof, but they may need reproofing a bit more often. Some fabrics that were previously “easy care” could mark more quickly or bead water less perfectly.

Trainers and textiles marketed with “dirt protection” or stain-guard claims are also part of the discussion. Anyone who wants PFAS-free clothing should pay closer attention to labels and manufacturers’ information.

In the bathroom: make-up and personal care

PFAS are currently used in some cosmetics, especially where products are meant to last exceptionally long. A “24-hour finish” sounds appealing, but it often relies on highly stable compounds. Many brands will need to rework formulations.

For users, that could mean less of a heavy, set-like feel on the skin, occasional touch-ups, and fewer concerning residues in the body. The same applies to waterproof mascaras or lipsticks with “superstay” promises.

How consumers can avoid PFAS now

Anyone who does not want to wait for the EU ban to be fully in place can already take practical steps. A few straightforward choices can noticeably reduce personal exposure:

  • When buying new pans and saucepans, ask for PFAS-free coatings, such as ceramic or cast iron.
  • Replace frequently worn outdoor jackets with PFAS-free alternatives, and check relevant labels.
  • Rely less on greasy takeaway packaging; transfer food onto plates or into reusable containers more often.
  • Avoid cosmetics listing terms such as “PTFE”, “Perfluor-…” or “Polyfluor-…” in the INCI ingredients list.
  • For carpet and upholstery sprays, choose fluorine-free products - or skip them entirely.

Another lever is how you deal with older items. Badly damaged non-stick pans are better removed from the kitchen. Very old outdoor jackets with fluorinated proofing also should not be kept in use indefinitely.

Why “forever chemical” is more than a buzzword

The term “forever chemicals” sounds dramatic, but it captures the issue with striking accuracy. PFAS contain very strong bonds between carbon and fluorine. Under natural conditions, those bonds barely break. Rain, sunlight and bacteria have little effect on them.

That creates a cumulative problem. Every tonne of PFAS produced remains in the system. Some reaches rivers via wastewater, some moves from landfill into soil, some evaporates and is transported to other regions. Over time, background contamination accumulates - and it persists even if PFAS are no longer actively used.

This persistence is particularly sensitive for children and pregnant women. Even small amounts in the blood can have effects during development. That is why medical professional bodies are calling for overall exposure to be reduced - similar to how past efforts tackled lead and other environmental toxins.

What everyday life could look like in a few years

A realistic picture is this: within five to ten years, European kitchens largely contain PFAS-free pans, wardrobes hold new generations of rain jackets, and fast-food packaging uses different coatings. Many people may barely notice changes in daily life - aside from a favourite pan needing a little more oil, or an outdoor jacket requiring regular use of a care spray.

The key question is how industry responds to the challenge. Companies that focus now on genuinely long-lasting, repairable products could even turn a trust problem into an opportunity. Brands that communicate transparently and rework supply chains are likely to stand out. At the same time, pressure is growing to scrutinise replacement substances carefully, so that no “PFAS 2.0” with similar drawbacks ends up on the market.

For consumers, it will pay to stay alert: fewer promises of absolute stain resistance and 30-day wear, and more attention to robust, straightforward materials. Shopping with that mindset not only lowers personal risk, but also helps ensure that “forever chemicals” truly become history - rather than just another entry in a chemicals reference book.
