The culprit is often your favourite programme.
Less electricity, less water, one button press: the washing machine’s Eco programme looks like the ideal answer for day-to-day life and the environment. When it comes to washing bedding, reaching for this mode can become almost automatic. Yet that same habit can slowly clog the machine, encourage bacteria, and even damage delicate fabrics such as linen.
The popular saving mode – good for the bills, bad for hygiene
An economy programme works with less water, a lower temperature and a much longer cycle. Typical settings sit at 40 to 50 °C, and often lower still. That reduces energy use, but it creates another issue: microorganisms survive these conditions surprisingly well.
Appliance service professionals report that, in recent years, more and more machines have arrived with the same set of problems: stubborn smells, slimy build-up, grey marks on light-coloured laundry - and this is particularly common in appliances that are run mostly on delicates or Eco settings.

Below around 60 °C, many germs are merely weakened rather than reliably killed. They settle in the usual trouble spots: the rubber door seal, the detergent drawer, hoses, and the rear of the drum. Over time, they form a tough layer known in technical terms as biofilm.
What exactly is this biofilm in a washing machine?
“Biofilm” sounds like jargon, but it is easy to describe in everyday terms: it is a slimy mix of bacteria, fungi, soap residue, skin flakes and detergent. This layer clings to any damp surface inside the appliance.
Laboratory tests show that, within just a few months, millions of germs can build up on the rubber seal around the door area. You usually notice the result the moment you open the door: a smell somewhere between rotten eggs, wet soil and a stagnant lake.
- Colour: grey, brownish or black, sometimes patchy
- Texture: slimy, rubbery, slightly greasy
- Common locations: door seal, detergent drawer, folds of the door gasket, drain area
- Side effect: small particles that detach and end up on textiles
You often see these particles as dark, irregular dots or streaks on pale laundry - especially on white or natural-coloured linen sheets.
Why linen bedding suffers so quickly
Linen is having a moment: natural, breathable, and beautifully understated. But this is exactly the sort of fabric that reacts badly to the consequences of the wrong washing habits.
High absorbency – high frustration
Linen absorbs moisture exceptionally well. That is comfortable in summer, but it can be a drawback in the wash. If bits of biofilm break loose inside the drum, linen can effectively soak them up. The marks then sit deep in the fibres and can be very difficult to remove.
On top of that, linen bedding is often bought in light shades - cream, natural, white or pastel. Any grey haze or spotty discolouration shows up immediately.

Long cycles, heavy wear

A full drum, too little water: when bedding becomes a washing machine killer
Another common mistake is: “If I’m doing a wash, I’ll do everything at once.” Duvet cover, flat sheet, fitted sheet, a few pillowcases - and perhaps two thick towels as well - as long as the drum is packed.
When wet, bedding weighs far more than it does when dry. The load can easily double or triple. For the machine, that is pure strain:
- The drum is more likely to go out of balance during spinning.
- Shock absorbers, bearings and springs wear out faster.
- The pump has to work harder because a heavy bundle of textiles can stop water draining freely.
With minimal water in Eco mode, sheets and covers often cling to the drum wall as one large ball. Detergent and water then struggle to reach every layer. The result: grey shadows, white detergent streaks and a clammy smell - even though the cycle is officially “finished”.
How to protect your machine and bedding with simple habits
Nobody needs to ban the Eco programme entirely. What matters is mixing programmes sensibly and adopting a few straightforward routines.
The 70% rule for the drum
Many manufacturers advise against filling the drum to the limit. A rule of thumb that works well in practice is to load to a maximum of 70 to 80%. A handy check: once the laundry is in, you should still be able to fit your hand flat between the washing and the top of the drum.
Before you load up, it is worth taking a moment to:
- Fully unfold each duvet cover and each sheet.
- Avoid stuffing large items inside one another (for example pillowcases inside a duvet cover).
- Don’t add large terry towels to linen bedding, so a heavy “knot” doesn’t form.
Wash hot regularly – not just for cleaning cloths
A key lever is using higher temperatures deliberately. In many households, 60 °C is now reserved only for towels or cleaning rags. If you want the machine to stay clean long-term, it is wise to wash bedding hot more often.
- After two to three Eco washes, schedule one bedding wash at 60 °C.
- Once a month, run an empty cycle at 90 °C with no laundry.
- Add about 1 litre of ordinary household vinegar directly into the drum.
The vinegar helps loosen limescale and soap residues that act as a breeding ground for germs. At the same time, the hot empty run attacks the biofilm layer, shifts it, and flushes it into the drain.
Small post-wash rituals with a big impact
Most problems don’t start during the wash itself, but in the many hours in between. Germs thrive inside a closed, damp machine.
Just a few seconds after each cycle can make a noticeable difference:
- Leave the machine door open, or at least ajar.
- Pull the detergent drawer out slightly so it can dry.
- Wipe the rubber seal quickly with a cloth if water collects there.

Detergent also matters: too much powder tends to leave residues, while too little liquid detergent may not clean properly. The dosage guidance on the packet is a good starting point - use a little less with very soft water, and don’t under-dose if you have hard water.

Many people get used to a slightly musty odour, especially in the bathroom or utility room. But if the machine smells strongly when you open it, or freshly washed bedding feels clammy and “old” after a few hours in the wardrobe, there is usually more going on than a “normal washing machine smell”.
That stench indicates that biofilm and germs have already spread significantly. This can ruin textiles and, over time, damage the appliance too: clogged hoses, blocked filters, jammed pumps. Repairs can quickly cost more than a few targeted maintenance cycles.

Different textiles need different care. If you have spent good money, it pays to do more than skim the label.

If damage is already visible: what you can still save
If grey veils or dark dots are already showing on linen sheets, a rescue attempt is worth making:
- Clean the washing machine thoroughly first (90 °C empty run, vinegar, clean the seal).
- Wash the linen bedding on its own or as a small load at 60 °C.
- Use a biological or heavy-duty detergent with a bleaching component for light-coloured laundry.
- Dry the bedding fully in the air afterwards; don’t fold and store it while damp.
Even so, some deep-set discolouration may never come out completely. That is why preventative care pays off far more than any later rescue effort.
More clarity in the programme jungle
Many washing machines now offer what feels like a dozen options: Eco, quick, hygiene, easy-care, cotton, intensive, mixed. In everyday life, most people keep pressing the same button out of convenience. A simple baseline strategy works better:
- Eco/delicates: for lightly soiled everyday items such as T-shirts, blouses and trousers.
- 60 °C programme: schedule regularly for bedding and towels.
- 90 °C empty cycle: a monthly cleaning ritual for the machine itself.
- Quick programme: only in a pinch, as cleaning performance is often weaker.
Choosing programmes deliberately helps you avoid grey sheets, a smelly drum and expensive call-outs. It also means high-quality textiles such as linen bedding keep their look for much longer - which is the whole reason you bought them in the first place.
