Your favourite T‑shirt print is flaking, the design looks tired - but rather than chucking it into the clothes bank, you can often save it surprisingly easily.
Plenty of people automatically reach for the bin bag the moment a T‑shirt print starts cracking and looking dull. Yet the fabric itself is usually still in great condition - it’s only the printed area that’s clearly taken a hit. With a simple bathroom staple and an iron, you can soften the print again and noticeably reduce fine cracks.
Why printed shirts start looking old so quickly
When a design on a T‑shirt turns cracked, the material underneath is rarely the problem. More often, it’s the top layer of vinyl or plastic-based ink that begins to break down. The worst areas are the ones that constantly stretch or fold: the stomach, chest, centre of the back, or spots near seams.
Over time, a few things typically happen:
- The print loses its flexibility.
- Everyday movement creates micro-cracks.
- The surface turns matte, brittle and “aged”.
- Small cracks can grow into larger chips and flakes.

- A thin cloth or baking paper as a protective layer
- An iron with adjustable temperature

1. Prep properly so nothing goes wrong

If you’ve worked on the print with acetone and heat, it’s best to handle it more gently afterwards. That helps the improvement last much longer.
- Wash inside out, up to 30°C.
- Skip fabric conditioner, as it can attack films and prints.
- Ideally air-dry; avoid the tumble dryer.
- Don’t iron directly on the print - again, use a protective layer.
