Many households are turning back to wood-burning stoves and fireplaces - whether because of gas prices, electricity bills, or simply for the cosy feel. As an example: if a household has been burning ten cubic metres of stacked logs per season, then depending on the stove and insulation standard, a noticeably smaller mass in briquette form may be enough. On top of that, you save storage space and trips for transport - and there’s less dirt carried through shared hallways.
They’re particularly appealing for anyone without a garden or yard. If you don’t have room for large wood stacks but still want a fire in the fireplace, the compact packs can free up a surprising amount of space.
What buyers should look for next time they stock up
There is now a wide selection: DIY stores, fuel merchants, solid-fuel yards and online retailers. Quality can vary noticeably between products.
- Check for visible cracks and breakage - overly crumbly briquettes can indicate problems during pressing.
- Review the maker’s stated moisture content and the source material.
- Look out for quality marks, such as standards confirming wood type and purity.
- Before placing a large order, test one or two packs to see how they behave in your own stove.
If you already have a modern stove with a glass viewing panel, you’ll usually notice the difference immediately: the flame looks calmer, the glass stays cleaner for longer, and the same amount of fuel produces clearly more usable heat.
For many households, it makes sense not to switch completely but to combine both: light the fire with standard logs, then add briquettes for the long ember phase. This way you keep the familiar “crackle” while benefiting from the high efficiency of compressed fuel - and you get significantly more from every fire.
