The heat pump boom is well under way, and many households want to swap their heating system as quickly as possible. But anyone who places the outdoor unit “anywhere in the garden” can be in for an unpleasant surprise. Planning law, noise protection and neighbour considerations often matter far more than people expect - and a location that seems harmless can suddenly become an expensive headache.

Why the heat pump location is more than a minor detail

Many brochures make it look straightforward: a compact unit sits discreetly behind the house, a bit of planting in front of it, job done. In practice, it is rarely that simple. An air-to-water heat pump may be treated in many German states as exempt from formal planning procedure, meaning it can often be installed without a traditional building permit. That does not mean you are free to put it anywhere on the plot.
