Indoor Air Pollution: Why the Air at Home Can Be Worse Than Outside

Yet indoors, the air can fill with pollutants you cannot see.

The belief that home is a safe harbour from traffic fumes and industrial smog still runs deep. But research increasingly points to a different reality: a hob left on, intensive cleaning, a scented candle, and even a hot shower can combine into a cocktail of gases and particles that may be more harmful to health than the air outside.

The enemy that starts inside the home

International bodies have been raising the alarm. In 2021, indoor air pollution was linked to around 2.9 million premature deaths worldwide, mainly associated with cardiovascular disease, stroke and respiratory conditions. This is not an abstract risk: it is the air surrounding families day after day.

A significant share of the problem is concentrated in places where cooking still relies on wood, charcoal or agricultural waste. Homes in these settings often have limited ventilation, and fine particle levels can reach up to one hundred times what is considered acceptable. Women and children-who tend to spend more time near the cooker or brazier-are often exposed for longer periods.

But the picture is not limited to rural areas or low-income countries. In cities-within well-finished flats with sound insulation and air conditioning-the risk looks different, but it does not disappear.

When modern comfort becomes a source of pollution

In high-income countries-and also in major Brazilian urban centres-household pollution is driven largely by comfort and lifestyle choices. Gas heaters, fireplaces, indoor barbecues, poorly ventilated cookers, scented candles and incense release irritating particles and gases each time they are used.

Studies in European homes show a consistent pattern: spikes in ultrafine particles happen exactly when residents are active-when bread is toasting, meat is browning in a pan, or a fragranced candle is burning beside the sofa. In research cited by scientific societies, everyday indoor events such as cooking, toasting and candle burning account for about 65% of daily exposure to particles in indoor environments.

Common cleaning and personal-care products add to the burden. Air fresheners, multi-surface cleaners, waxes, hair sprays and perfumes emit volatile organic compounds, known as VOCs. In many homes, VOC concentrations are two to five times higher than outdoors, pushed up by inadequate air exchange.

What most pollutes the air indoors

  • Cooking on a high heat, frying or grilling without an effective extractor.
  • Burning candles or incense, or using fireplaces and indoor barbecues.
  • Using spray cleaners or strongly fragranced products in closed rooms.
  • Lighting cigarettes, shisha, or heated tobacco devices indoors.

Why we can be heavily exposed without noticing

The main reason is straightforward: time spent indoors. Most people spend much of the day in enclosed spaces-home, workplace, transport, school. In many cases, more than 80% of waking hours are spent under a roof. Small, repeated emissions build up and create a near-constant background haze of pollutants.

Another factor is misplaced trust in what we can see. Air may look clean, with no obvious dust, but that says nothing about microscopic particles and odourless gases. Many of these pollutants do not cause immediate irritation; instead, their effects can surface over years-more frequent asthma attacks, worsening rhinitis, fatigue, headaches, and a higher risk of chronic illness.

How to cut pollution without giving up comfort

Air-quality specialists generally point to three complementary steps: tackle the sources, improve ventilation, and use technology in ways that genuinely support respiratory health.

Tackle the sources of pollution

The most effective starting point is to remove or reduce the biggest emitters. That can mean replacing old, smoky appliances with more efficient models and better extraction. In regions still using wood or charcoal, switching-where available-to mains gas, LPG or electricity can bring particle levels down immediately.

Everyday habits also make a measurable difference:

  • Avoid frequent frying and choose methods such as baking, steaming or using a pressure cooker.
  • Turn on the cooker hood whenever the hob is in use, and keep it running for a few minutes after cooking finishes.
  • Cut back on candles and incense, keeping them for occasional use.
  • Choose less fragranced cleaning products, ideally liquids rather than sprays.
  • Never smoke indoors, even with windows open.

Ventilation: opening up at the right time

Poor ventilation is indoor pollution’s quiet ally. When air is not refreshed, what is produced by flames, cleaning agents or even the plastics in newly purchased furniture stays in circulation.

A few practical moves help shift this:

  • Open windows on opposite sides of the property to create a through-draught, particularly during cooking and shortly afterwards.
  • Ventilate utility areas and bathrooms well, where chemical products often concentrate.
  • Avoid keeping the home sealed all the time for the sake of air-conditioning efficiency; alternate with periods of natural ventilation.

When technology comes into play

Newer buildings are increasingly fitted with mechanical ventilation systems and high-efficiency filters. In older houses and flats, portable devices can help-but only if chosen carefully.

Volatile organic compounds, meanwhile, are carbon-based molecules that evaporate easily. They come from paints, varnishes, solvents, fuels, fragrances, plastics and even new furniture. Indoors, they can trigger irritation, headaches and allergies and, with prolonged exposure, contribute to more serious health outcomes.

Practical scenarios inside a typical flat

Picture a small flat, typical of large cities. In the morning, the resident takes a hot shower and leaves the bathroom shut, with steam and hygiene products lingering in the air. Next, they make breakfast by frying eggs on a high heat without switching on the extractor. Later, they do a thorough clean with a fragranced cleaner in every room, keeping windows closed so that “dust doesn’t come in”. At night, a scented candle is lit in the living room while they watch a series.

None of these actions sounds extreme. But together, they can add up to hours of exposure to particles and VOCs at concentrations far higher than on the pavement outside the building. Small changes-using extraction, opening windows at strategic moments, swapping a few products and reducing candle burning-can materially shift that picture.

Another common situation involves children and older adults, who spend more time at home. Poorly ventilated bedrooms, soft toys that hold dust, heavy-duty cleaning products used too often, and windows kept shut out of concern for noise or security can create a harsher micro-environment precisely for those with more sensitive lungs.
