On driveways everywhere from London to Los Angeles, a low-key security habit is gaining traction: people are wrapping everyday car keys in crackly kitchen aluminium foil.
It might look like something lifted from an online rabbit hole, but the idea is backed by straightforward physics and an increasingly common kind of vehicle crime. As car theft becomes more reliant on wireless tech, motorists are reaching for one of the cheapest items in the cupboard to push back.

Keyless entry was marketed as hassle-free motoring. You approach the vehicle, touch the handle and it unlocks; press a button and it starts. No scrabbling for a key in bad weather and no rummaging through a bag.
