The ceiling fan: not just the “poor man’s air con”

For a long time, the ceiling fan (also known as an air circulator) has been dismissed as the “poor man’s air con” - yet it actually comes with plenty of benefits.

There was a time when summers drifted by to the steady whirr of ceiling fans. You know the type: those spinning blades, fixed in our childhood memories, marking out heatwave afternoons and air-con-free evenings. Their gentle draft filled the quiet moments - post-lunch naps included - and even today they bring back a calmer era, when time seemed to pause… just like they did, hanging from the ceiling. Nostalgia aside, the ceiling fan can still be genuinely effective.

The ceiling fan is far from the “poor man’s air con”

On this point, the French Agency for Ecological Transition (ADEME) is clear: “Solutions exist to keep your home cool. Air conditioning is not always essential.” Among the agency’s recommendations are closing shutters as soon as the sun hits the windows, shutting those windows from mid-morning onwards, and avoiding the use of appliances that generate heat (the oven, in particular).

ADEME also encourages the use of fans which, even if they do not actually cool a room, help move air around and create a pleasant cooling sensation on the skin. And as the heatwave has settled over France, the agency’s message could well help bring ceiling fans (or air circulators) back into fashion.

How a ceiling fan lowers the felt temperature

According to some specialists, a ceiling fan can push cooler air around thanks to its blades, delivering a gain of around 5° in perceived temperature. The other bit of good news is that it is notably energy-efficient. “An air circulator uses 25 to 40 times less electricity than air con, for a service that can be comparable,” says Robert Célaire, a bioclimatic engineer.

Cost, roll-out examples, and practical installation limits

The upfront outlay is also lower. Recently, on the outskirts of Lyon (in Vénissieux), the local authority installed 150 ceiling fans across around thirty buildings, for €90,000. The airflow they create helps the body shed heat through the skin by stimulating the evapotranspiration process, influencing how hot a person feels - even if it does not change what the thermometer reads.

Ceiling fans are estimated to be present in 2.5% of homes in France, compared with more than 60% in the United States. Still, fitting ceiling fans in homes can run into a very practical constraint: ceiling height. In houses and flats, this is generally limited to 2.50 metres, and it is recommended to leave 2.30 metres between the floor and the blades. And if you have neither air con nor a ceiling fan, there is always another way to tackle the heat: using… ice cubes.

Mosquitoes and MaPrimeRénov’ eligibility

Finally, a ceiling fan can also help against mosquitoes, which struggle to fly properly in moving air. On top of that, the system may be eligible for MaPrimeRénov’, although only under certain conditions. Not so old-fashioned, the ceiling fan - right?
