Yet quietly, something at floor level is turning into the perfect home for mould.
At the height of winter, many people rush to block draughts, turn the heating up and create that “safe haven” feeling indoors. The trade-off is that less fresh air comes in, humidity creeps up, and an old problem returns: mould, odd smells and respiratory flare-ups. And the biggest accomplice often isn’t the walls or the bathroom - it’s right under your feet.
The culprit underfoot: how a carpet becomes a mould greenhouse
In everyday living spaces, the main place moisture and fungi build up is the carpet. From a thick pile rug in the lounge to a hallway runner or a kitchen mat, they all behave like a discreet sponge.
While you’re thinking about damp patches, leaks or a poorly sealed window, the carpet keeps soaking up moisture from the air, holding on to dust and collecting organic debris: pet hair, dead skin, crumbs, drink splashes and dried mud from shoes. That “buffet” is exactly what mould needs to move in.

Wool, cotton, sisal and other natural-fibre carpets are prized for comfort and a more premium look. In damp conditions, though, they have a downside: they are exceptionally good at drawing in and retaining water.

To limit the build-up of moisture, dust and spores, a straightforward routine makes a real difference:
- Vacuum at least twice a week, using the correct carpet brush attachment, to lift dust, hair and organic residue.
- Dry any wet mark straight away, blotting with absorbent paper and, if needed, using a hairdryer on a warm setting from a safe distance.

- Air the home for at least 10 minutes daily, opening windows on opposite sides where possible to create a through-draught.

If that same resident starts opening the windows for 10 minutes in the morning, moves the airer into the utility area, vacuums the carpet twice a week and dries any splashes immediately, the likelihood of mould drops sharply. The rug remains a vulnerable spot, but it stops behaving like an active reservoir of damp and fungi.
