The air is motionless, the thermometer keeps climbing - and the flat starts to feel like an oven.
Yet there’s a surprisingly effective secret weapon sitting in the freezer.
While plenty of people consider buying an expensive air-conditioning unit, the simplest fixes often start in the ice-cube tray. With a few quick steps, you can make the heat indoors more bearable - no high-tech required, just a dash of physics, a bit of organisation and a few well-placed bowls of ice.
Why ice cubes can actually cool a room
At first, it sounds like a summer myth. In reality, there’s a straightforward physical process behind it: ice needs heat to melt, and it takes that heat from the surrounding air.
Ice cubes draw energy from the air as they melt - this removal of heat lowers the temperature locally and creates a noticeable feeling of freshness.
In practical terms, this is what happens: as long as the ice remains frozen, it continuously absorbs heat while melting. That energy is then missing from the air right around it. The impact is limited, but if you put the ice in the right place, you can noticeably improve how the room feels. No one should expect to push a 30°C room down to 22°C. Ice cubes provide local relief during hot spells - they don’t replace well-planned shading or proper building insulation.
Moisture, furniture and mould risk
Melting ice brings two issues with it: water on surfaces and extra humidity in the air. If you put bowls or bottles straight onto wood, you risk rings, swelling or discolouration. Coasters and towels are essential.
There’s also the moisture added to the air. In well-ventilated rooms, that’s rarely a problem. In small, poorly aired spaces, however, it can turn into a muggy, sticky indoor climate. The key concept is “heat absorption during a phase change”. In simple terms: a substance needs energy to change from solid to liquid. For ice, that energy comes from the surrounding air. That’s why a bowl of melting ice can feel very cold for quite a long time, even once some of the contents have already turned to water.

In that situation, you’re better served by a mix of sun protection, night-time ventilation, building insulation and, if necessary, an efficient air-conditioning unit. Ice cubes then become more of an add-on: for the desk, the children’s rooms or the one particularly stifling night in a loft bedroom.
