Some people curse the boiler, some write the whole day off, and some just stand there under a miserable trickle of tepid disappointment, wondering when we all became this reliant on hidden pipework. When UK energy prices went haywire, that small, assumed comfort started to feel like a challenge: what is a hot shower actually worth?
That question is what put me, eventually, in a muddy field, squinting at something that looked like a home-made science experiment: a black barrel, a run of copper pipe, and an old caravan gas bottle. The cost of getting “free” hot water

And there’s something else going on underneath: many of us secretly like the idea of understanding our homes again. Knowing where heat comes from, what it costs, and what happens to it on the way to the tap. We pretend it’s boring adult stuff, yet you can see people light up when the explanation matches the experience - warm water on demand and a small number in a spreadsheet.
Could this actually work for you?
Off-grid hot water isn’t a universal fix. Flats without outdoor space, listed buildings, and rented homes with strict rules are all much harder to adapt. Nobody is strapping a 200-litre barrel to a third-floor balcony in Hackney. And not everyone has the time, tools or patience to spend weekends checking flow rates with a thermometer and a notebook.
Even so, there are softer versions of the same approach. Straightforward solar thermal panels feeding an existing cylinder. Small point-of-use heaters supplied by pre-warmed loft tanks. Or simply changing when you run an immersion heater while the sun is shining, if you already have PV on the roof. The idea stays constant: let “freeish” energy handle the slow, background work, and save the pricey, high-density fuel for short, sharp bursts.
If you’re tempted, the first step is painfully unglamorous: measure. How much hot water do you really use? Do your biggest draws happen in the morning, the evening, or spread across the day? What are you paying per kWh? Without that baseline, every off-grid claim is just vibes.
